Kankanashikhari Temple

A Devotee’s Experience at Kankanashikhari Temple

Hidden in the serene hills of Nairi village near Chilika Lake lies a sacred gem that few outside Odisha have heard of — Kankanashikhari Temple, a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Jagannath.

Last month, I had the divine opportunity to visit this spiritually rich destination, and what I found was far more than just a temple — it was a sanctuary of silence, devotion, and deep cultural connection.

 The Journey Begins

As I rode through the rural roads flanked by palm trees and vibrant greenery, I was welcomed by the calm waters of Chilika Lake, India’s largest brackish water lagoon. Just a few kilometers beyond, the temple stood quietly — far from the bustling crowds of Puri, yet just as spiritually significant.

🙏 A Temple Steeped in Devotion

Kankanashikhari is believed to be one of the ancient Jagannath temples where Lord Jagannath is worshipped in a peaceful, nature-rich setting. The main sanctum offers a unique experience — no large queue, no rush, just undisturbed darshan in an environment that feels like the Lord is listening to your silence.

The temple priests and villagers shared stories of how this place becomes special during Rath Yatra, especially when the deities are taken out for a floating yatra near Chilika, symbolizing divine movement and grace.

A Healing Space for the Soul

For those seeking mental peace, spiritual clarity, or just a break from city chaos, Kankanashikhari is more than a pilgrimage — it’s a spiritual detox. I sat under the banyan tree behind the temple, listening to the wind rustling the leaves — a rare silence that somehow spoke more than words.
